The War of the Worlds by H.G.Wells (first published in 1897) is amongst my favourite science fiction novels. Having seen the film starring Tom Cruise (which I actually quite like, although I realise it is frowned upon!) I was careful to paint this image based on my interpretations from descriptions in the book and my own imagination as much as possible. It wasn’t until this point that I realised how little the tripods are described. This increased my interpretation of H.G.Wells’ writing. He manages to create a strong feeling of terror by leading the reader to their own imagination.
