I’m always drawn to night-time scenes when it comes to landscapes. I like the atmosphere created by snippets of light from the moon or from streetlamps highlighting edges and shapes. I had been watching BBC series Dickensian when I painted this scene and was imagining Victorian streets, dark and mysterious, lit by the glow from shop windows. Frome’s famous Catherine Hill lends itself well and a lovely rainy autumn evening was perfect with reflections on the cobbled ground.
